Most Christians who worry they are not growing are measuring the wrong things. They count chapters read, services attended, small groups joined. When the numbers hold steady they assume something is happening underneath. Sometimes it is. Sometimes those numbers are the only part of the life that is moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul wrote to the Corinthians that he could not address them as spiritual people but as infants in Christ. He had lived among them. He knew their names. And he could look at that church and tell them flatly that they had stalled out. That ought to bother us more than it does, because it means growth is not a private matter you assess alone in your own head. Other people can see it. Discipleship in the Bible leaves evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what is the evidence? Here is what I watch for, in myself first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spiritual Growth Begins with a Heart Shaped by God’s Word<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Peter tells new believers to crave pure spiritual milk like newborn infants, so that by it they may grow up into salvation. Crave. He is not prescribing a discipline there. He is describing an appetite, which is a strange thing to command someone to have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the first mark I look for and the easiest one to fake. Anybody can get through a chapter a day. The real question is what the chapter does to you on the way through. When you hit something in the text that contradicts how you have been living, what happens next? Some people find it interesting and move on. Others close the book and carry it around for the rest of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bible verses on spiritual growth<\/mark><\/strong><\/a> keep tying the Word to the heart instead of the head. The psalmist stored God’s Word in his heart specifically so he would not sin against God. James describes a man who looks at his face in a mirror and walks away having forgotten what he looks like. The information went in fine. Nothing came of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Maturing Disciple Learns to Obey, Not Just Understand<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I learned this one slowly and at some cost. You can grow in biblical knowledge while shrinking in faithfulness, and the two can happen in the same man at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have known people who could hold their own in a theological argument with anyone in the room and could not hold their marriage together. I have been a smaller version of that person more times than I want to write down here. Understanding is not obedience. In Scripture it is obedience that gets counted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus was blunt about it. If you love me, you will keep my commandments. He did not say you will grasp them or find them persuasive. You will keep them. Anyone asking how to become a disciple of Jesus<\/mark><\/strong><\/a> in any serious way runs into this early. The meaning of discipleship in the New Testament sits much closer to apprenticeship than to enrollment. You walk around after the master and you do what he does until you can do it without being told.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is discipleship in practice? It is the unglamorous work of bringing every part of your life under Christ’s lordship, especially the parts you would rather negotiate over. Most of us keep a short mental list of areas quietly marked exempt. How you speak to your wife at eleven at night when you are worn through. What you do with money nobody knows you have. What you reach for when the house is empty. Growth is that list getting shorter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

True Growth Shows Up in Character, Humility, and Love<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The marks of a mature Christian in Scripture are almost disappointingly ordinary. Paul lays them out in Galatians. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Not one of them is a skill you could put on a resume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have watched gifted men rise fast and then come apart, and it is almost never competence that fails. It is character. The gifting outran the soul, and eventually the soul could not hold up what the gifting had built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humility is what I watch hardest, because over a long enough stretch it cannot be counterfeited. A humble person takes correction without going defensive and without collapsing into self-pity, which are two sides of the same coin. He can be wrong in front of people. He can be glad about someone else’s success without quietly measuring it against his own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then there is love. Not warmth. The costly kind, aimed at people who cannot pay you back and might not thank you. That is the sign of spiritual maturity that outlives every other one on the list. If your faith is making you more impressive and less kind, something has gone wrong down at the roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spiritual Maturity Means Bearing Fruit in Everyday Life<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Jesus said we would be known by our fruit, and the image he picked is worth sitting with. Fruit is not something a tree strains to make. It is what shows up when a healthy tree is left alone to be a tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which means <\/strong>spiritual growth in the Bible<\/mark><\/strong><\/a> involves less white-knuckling than most of us assume. Abide in me, he said. Stay connected to the vine. The fruit follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That turns the question of how to grow spiritually into a question about connection. Where do you actually meet God? For some men it is early, before the house wakes up. For others it is a long drive, or a walk with the dog, or twenty minutes in a parked car before going inside. Whatever yours is, guard it. It is always the first thing to go when the calendar fills, and it is the last thing you can afford to lose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fifth mark gets skipped most often. A <\/strong>maturing disciple makes other disciples. Paul told Timothy to hand what he had received to faithful men who could then teach others. You are not done growing until someone else is growing because of you. If you have been walking with Christ for ten years and nobody is following you toward Jesus, sit with that a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to Start This Week<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Pick one thing. Not five, and not a whole new system. One area you have kept off the table, and put it in front of somebody this week who will ask you about it next month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grace is where all of it starts, and most of us understand it worse than we think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
