Why Money Conversations Matter in a Healthy Marriage<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Jesus talked about money more than almost anything else, and He was never only talking about money. He was talking about trust. Where your treasure is, your heart follows right behind. That line gives every couple a diagnostic tool they did not ask for. Look at last month’s spending. That is a map of your affections, printed for you by your bank, free of charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Two people who cannot talk about their spending are two people who cannot talk about their hearts. Money management in marriage is a spiritual matter long before it becomes a mathematical one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

She grew up watching her father hide receipts in the glove compartment. He grew up in a house where asking about money got you sent to your room. Neither of them chose those instincts. Both of them brought them into a covenant and called it privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

It is not privacy. It is a wall running down the middle of a marriage God said should have none.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

How to Build Trust Through Shared Financial Goals<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Trust does not show up because you promised to be honest. It shows up because you were honest on Tuesday, and again on Thursday, and again three weeks later when telling the truth cost you something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

So put it on the calendar. Once a month, same day, same hour, phones in another room. Bring every number. The first two or three of these will be miserable, and you should plan for that instead of being surprised by it. You are taking apart two separate systems that each of you built alone, before you ever met. Managing resources as one household means one of your systems has to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Then name something you want together. Not “get better with money.” Something with a date on it. The car paid off by August. Flying to see her mother in the spring. Quietly covering a family’s groceries for a month and telling nobody at church. Managing wealth without a shared aim collapses into two people defending their own preferences. With a shared aim, you are sitting on the same side of the table staring at the same problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creating a Budget That Respects Both Spouses<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

A budget one spouse writes and hands to the other is not a budget. It is a policy. Policies breed resentment, and resentment is patient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Build it out loud, together, line by line, even the boring lines. And build freedom into it. Each of you gets an amount you can spend without a reason, without a receipt, without a look across the room. Twenty dollars, a hundred, whatever this season allows. That one line does more for the peace of a home than any tracking app ever will, because of what it says underneath: I trust you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Listen to the way you ask your questions. “Why did you spend that?” and “Tell me about this one, I’m curious” are not the same sentence. One is an audit. The other is a marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Handling Debt, Saving, and Giving as One Team<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Debt that walked into the marriage belongs to the marriage. I know that lands hard on the spouse who arrived with none, and I am not pretending otherwise. But you did not marry her income and assume her balances separately. You married her. The loans came attached to the person, and now the two of you pay them the way you handle everything else in that house. Together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Give first. Before the debt payment, before the savings transfer, before the good and responsible things. Not because God is short on funds, but because you both need proof every month that the money does not own you. Couples who plan to start giving once things settle down never start. Things do not settle down. That is what things do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Save next, and save with a purpose attached. An emergency fund is not weak faith. It is love for your spouse arranged in advance, waiting for a day you cannot see from here. Then go after the debt with what is left, smallest balance first, and say it out loud when one disappears. Ordinary faithfulness deserves to be noticed by somebody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is your assignment this week. Ask your spouse the one money question you have been avoiding, then keep your mouth shut long enough to hear the entire answer without defending yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
