A man in my congregation asked me last spring whether he was sinning by opening a brokerage account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He had been saving for eleven years. Cash, all of it, in a checking account earning nothing. His father lost a house in 2008, and somewhere in his twenties this man decided money was dangerous and the safest thing to do with it was nothing at all. So it sat there. Inflation took roughly a third of it while he waited for a permission slip nobody would ever hand him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I told him he had spent eleven years obeying a verse that isn’t in the Bible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We do this in church. We hear that the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and we quietly shave it down to “money is evil,” which is not what Paul wrote or meant. One warns about your heart. The other is a superstition about paper. If you want to know how to invest money as somebody who follows Jesus, you have to get the diagnosis right first. Scripture is far less nervous about wealth than most Christians are. It’s also far more brutal about what wealth does to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ask what the Bible says about money, and you’ll turn up something stranger than either the prosperity crowd or the poverty romantics want you to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Abraham was rich. Job was rich, before and after. Lydia sold purple cloth, ran a real business, and paid for a church out of her margins. The woman in Proverbs 31 looks at a field, evaluates it, buys it, and plants a vineyard with what she earned. That’s a capital allocation decision sitting right there in your Bible, and nobody flinches at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then there’s the parable of the talents. It’s the most direct thing Jesus ever said about investing, and we spiritualize it into mush every time we teach it. Three servants, three sums of money. Two of them put it to work and doubled it. The third one buries his in the dirt and gets called wicked and slothful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Read that again if you’ve been sitting on cash because you’re scared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The man who got condemned in that story wasn’t reckless. He was careful. He was safe. His whole sin was treating his master’s money as something to protect instead of something to grow, and Jesus does not go easy on him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bible verses about money almost never have a problem with the money. They have a problem with the grip. Ecclesiastes says whoever loves money never has enough, which diagnoses the soul dressed up as a financial observation. The rich young ruler walked away sad, and not because owning things is forbidden. His stuff had become the one thing he couldn’t let go of. Jesus watched him leave and didn’t run after him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You cannot serve God and money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Look at the verb there. Not own. Not have. Serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The real test isn’t the size of your account. It’s what happens to you when the number moves. Market drops eighteen percent; does your prayer life change? A friend hits a rough month and asks for help, and your first thought is running the math on what it costs you? A guy who can’t sleep during a correction isn’t investing anymore. He’s worshipping, and he picked a god that goes down eighteen percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here’s what I tell people who sit across from me in counseling. Give first. Before you invest, before you save, before the mortgage clears. Not because God’s short on funds. Because generosity is the only thing I’ve ever seen actually break the accumulation reflex. Money that leaves your hands before it settles into your identity does more spiritual work in you than a year of sermons. Do it the day the paycheck lands, while it still feels like it isn’t yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Scripture won’t tell you which index fund to buy. What it gives you is better than a stock tip. It’s a way of thinking that has survived every market cycle anybody has ever written down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Spread it out. Ecclesiastes 11 says give a portion to seven, or even eight, because you don’t know what disaster is coming. That’s diversification, roughly three thousand years before somebody put it in a textbook and charged for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Go slow. Whoever gathers little by little will increase it, says Proverbs, and in the same breath warns that money made in a hurry tends to vanish. Every generation gets its own scheme promising to squeeze thirty years into eighteen months. They fail the same way every time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stay out of debt when you can. The borrower is a slave to the lender. That isn’t poetry. Ask somebody carrying a balance at twenty-four percent how free their conscience feels when the statement shows up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Count the cost before you sign anything. Jesus used a construction site to make this point. A man lays a foundation, runs out of money, and the whole town stands around laughing at him. So read the prospectus. Find the fees. If you can’t explain the thing to your wife in plain English, you don’t know it well enough to put your family’s money in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That verse assumes a time horizon we’ve mostly given up on. We invest for retirement, which means we invest for ourselves, and then we die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kingdom investing asks a longer question. What does this become in forty years if I’m not the one who gets to enjoy it? That’s how church plants get funded. That’s how adoptions get paid for, how a widow in your congregation keeps her house. The compounding that grows a portfolio grows generosity on exactly the same curve, and I’ll tell you something I’ve watched for years now. The believers who give most freely at sixty are almost never the ones who earned the most. They’re the ones who started the habit early and never let it lapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Your money is going somewhere after you’re gone. It always does. The only thing you get to decide is whether you point it or the probate court does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Open the account this week. Then set up the giving before you set up the investing, and pay attention to which one is harder to click.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
