What Is Sexual Attraction? A Biblical Look at Same-Sex Desires

Understanding the Desire: What Scripture Teaches About Attraction and Human Design

A young man once wrote to me after a Sunday service, unable to say the words out loud yet. Why do I feel what I feel, when everything around me says I shouldn’t? That question deserves honesty, not a slogan.

What is sexual attraction, at its most basic level? It is a pull toward another person, physical, emotional, often both at once, arriving mostly unbidden. Nobody chooses their attractions from a menu. Attraction is shaped by biology, experience, wounds, and mystery we cannot fully untangle. Researchers even describe genetic sexual attraction, a documented pull some biological relatives feel toward each other after meeting as adults following years apart. That phenomenon exists because attraction is not simple or fully explainable by one factor. Feelings arrive uninvited, across many categories, including same-sex attraction.

Genesis 1 tells us God made humanity male and female, in His image, and called it good. That design carries weight. It does not erase the real experience of someone drawn toward the same sex, often from a young age, without any clear cause. Scripture never asks us to pretend feelings do not exist. It asks something harder. What do we do with them?

Walking in Integrity: Aligning Our Heart, Desires, and Identity with Christ

Feeling an attraction is not itself the sin. Paul distinguishes between temptation and the choice to act on it. Hebrews 4:15 says Jesus was tempted in every way, yet without sin. Temptation touched Him. It did not define Him.

Your identity was never meant to rest on any attraction, same-sex or otherwise. Galatians 2:20 says it plainly. I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. That verse dismantles every identity built on desire or self-definition. Your deepest identity is not gay, not straight, not attracted. Your deepest identity is beloved child of God, before any label gets attached.

Walking in integrity means bringing the full truth of your experience before God, rather than hiding it in shame or building an identity around it. Confess it honestly in prayer. Find one trustworthy person who will not flinch. Isolation feeds shame. Honesty starves it, slowly, over years.

Finding True Community: How the Church Can Offer Grace, Truth, and Authentic Fellowship

I have watched churches fail people in two opposite ways. Some communities offer only condemnation, driving people away from Jesus entirely. Others offer only affirmation, never engaging the harder biblical conversation. Neither extreme reflects how Jesus treated struggling people.

Jesus sat with the woman at the well, named her situation honestly, and offered her living water anyway, in the same conversation. Grace and truth arrived together, not in competition. A healthy church does the same. It creates space where someone can say, out loud, I experience this, without exile, and without the truth of Scripture quietly set aside to keep things comfortable.

If you are walking through this, find a church that will sit with you in both grace and truth simultaneously. Ask for it directly if you have to. You deserve real fellowship, not performance from either side.

You are not alone in this struggle, and you were never meant to carry it in silence. Bring it into the light today, with someone who loves Jesus enough to tell you the truth gently.

I would especially recommend the guide Sexual Attraction: A Christian Perspective on Same-Sex Desires.
