How to Be a True Disciple of Christ: Lessons on Forgiveness from the Early Church

The early Christians realized that following Christ involved more than just knowing the Bible and going to events. A changed heart that represented Christ was necessary.

Forgiveness as a Mark of a Disciple of Christ

Believers lived in close quarters and frequently faced persecution in the early decades following Jesus’ resurrection. There would inevitably be conflicts. However, a startling trend emerges from early Christian writings and historical accounts: forgiveness was necessary. Jesus’ instruction to extend forgiveness “seventy times seven” was interpreted literally. Forgiveness was seen by the early Church as a clear indication that a person was genuinely a follower of Christ.

To be a disciple of Christ meant refusing to let bitterness take root. Believers showed faith in God’s justice rather than their own need for dominance or retribution when they forgave one another. One of the best ways to share the gospel with the world was through this countercultural lifestyle.

How to Be a Disciple of Christ in Everyday Relationships

Many believers today ask how to be a disciple of Christ in practical, daily life. In everyday problems such as family conflicts, miscommunication at church, or unresolved past hurts, the solution often starts with forgiveness. Knowing that strained relationships impede spiritual development, the early Christians immediately practiced reconciliation.

Forgiveness does not absolve wrongdoing or minimize suffering, rather, it entrusts healing to God. When we extend forgiveness, we emulate Jesus, who extended forgiveness despite his suffering. This stance transforms our emotions and aligns our lives with the message we share.

Living Out Forgiveness as a Spiritual Discipline

Forgiveness was viewed by the early Church as a spiritual discipline rather than a one-time choice. Believers could continually live in grace through prayer, confession, and community accountability. The same rhythms can be adopted today by anyone who chooses to live faithfully as a disciple of Christ. Our faith remains active and sincere through deliberate acts of reconciliation, prayer for adversaries, and regular self-examination.

In a damaged world, we embody Christ’s love when we choose forgiveness. This is how discipleship manifests itself and how faith transitions from words to deeds.
