Leadership Training from Moses: How the Bible Points Us to Our True North

Leadership Training from Moses: How the Bible Points Us to Our True North

I’ve sat with a lot of men and women over the years who wanted to lead well. Business owners. Youth pastors. Parents trying to guide a household through hard seasons. Almost every one of them asked the same question in different words. Where do I find my compass? Scripture answers that question through a man who never wanted the job in the first place.

Moses stood at a burning bush and argued with God for five straight chapters. He listed every reason he couldn’t lead. He wasn’t a good speaker. He had no standing among his people. He had blood on his hands from Egypt. God didn’t hand him a leadership manual. God gave him a presence and a promise. That’s still how it works.

The Wilderness Was the Classroom

Nobody builds real leadership training in comfort. Moses spent forty years herding sheep in Midian before he led a single Israelite anywhere. Those decades weren’t wasted time. They stripped him down. The prince of Egypt became a shepherd who knew hunger, weather, and the stubbornness of animals that wouldn’t listen.

That’s the pattern you’ll find across the whole of Scripture. David tended sheep before he wore a crown. Joseph sat in a prison cell before he ran a nation’s grain supply. Paul spent years in Arabia before he planted a single church. Leadership growth rarely happens on a stage. It happens in the quiet stretch nobody claps for. If you’re in that stretch right now, wondering why God seems slow, take heart. He’s building something in you that an audience would only interrupt.

Serving Came Before Ruling

Here’s what strikes me every time I read Exodus. Moses never stopped being a servant, even after Pharaoh let the people go. He washed no feet, but he carried complaints, fielded rebellions, and interceded for a nation that turned on him constantly. When his people demanded water, he didn’t retreat to his tent and issue commands. He fell on his face before God and begged for them.

That’s servant leadership in its rawest form. Not a technique borrowed from a business seminar. A posture forged under pressure. Jesus would later kneel with a towel and a basin and make the point unmistakable. Whoever wants to be great must become the servant of all. Moses lived that centuries before it had a name.

I’ve watched leaders burn out trying to manage from the top down, barking orders and demanding loyalty they never earned. It doesn’t last. The leaders who actually change rooms, churches, and families are the ones who stay low. They carry burdens instead of delegating every hard thing away. They remember whose people these really are.

Your True North Isn’t a Personality Trait

Moses wasn’t naturally confident. He wasn’t naturally eloquent. What he had was direction. God gave him a fixed point to walk toward, and every decision after the bush got measured against that point. Your calling works the same way. Gifting matters less than you think. Direction matters more.

Ask yourself honestly what you’re walking toward. Some leaders drift for years, mistaking busyness for purpose. Full calendars. Long meetings. No compass. Moses had eighty years to figure that out, forty of them in a desert most people would call wasted. God doesn’t waste seasons. He shapes leaders in them.

Pick one relationship this week where you can serve rather than direct. Wash a proverbial foot. Carry a burden that isn’t yours to carry, and watch what God does with your obedience.
