Loving Your Enemies: Grace for Those Who Hurt You

Loving Your Enemies: Grace for Those Who Hurt You

The Hard Call: Understanding Biblical Grace

A man once asked me, half joking, if Jesus really meant that verse, or if it got lost in translation. Love your enemies. Surely there was an asterisk. There isn’t. Matthew 5:44 says it plainly. Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.

This is not a suggestion for the spiritually advanced. It is the standard for anyone who follows Christ. Loving your enemies separates a Christian ethic from every other moral system. Plenty of philosophies teach kindness toward friends. Jesus alone commands it toward people actively working against you.

Here is what makes this call so hard. Grace was never meant to feel fair. Romans 5:8 says God demonstrates His own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Not after we cleaned up. Christ moved toward us first, while we were still His enemies. Grace given before it was earned.

I have watched this teaching offend people more than almost any other in Scripture. Someone hurts you badly, betrays your trust, wounds your family, and Jesus asks you to bless them instead of building a case against them. That cuts against every instinct in a wounded heart.

Breaking the Cycle: Choosing Love Over Retaliation

Retaliation feels like justice in the moment. It rarely delivers what it promises. Someone wrongs you, you wrong them back, they escalate, and two families end up locked in a cycle neither remembers starting. I have watched this play out in marriages and congregations split for decades over an offense nobody can articulate anymore.

Jesus interrupts that cycle with a strange strategy. Turn the other cheek, He says in Matthew 5:39. Not because pain does not matter. Because retaliation multiplies pain instead of ending it. Someone has to absorb the debt rather than pass it forward. Jesus asks His followers to be that someone.

Bible verses about forgiveness keep circling back to this theme. Colossians 3:13 tells us to bear with each other, forgiving as the Lord forgave you. Forgiveness is not pretending the wound never happened. It releases your claim to make the other person pay. You hand the debt to God instead of collecting it yourself.

Practically, this looks like praying for the specific person who hurt you, by name, before you feel any warmth toward them. Feelings often follow obedience, not the reverse. Pray blessing over them anyway. Watch what shifts in your chest after weeks of that, even if they never change.

Finding Healing: Resting in God’s Ultimate Justice

Loving your enemies does not mean pretending wrongdoing does not matter. Romans 12:19 releases the demand for justice, not because justice is unimportant, but because it belongs to someone with far better judgment than yours. Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord. That is not a threat. It is relief for anyone exhausted from carrying a grudge alone.

Healing begins the moment you stop being judge and executioner in your own story. Let God hold the scales. He sees details and motives you cannot access, and He will settle every account with perfect precision, on His timeline, not yours.

This does not mean staying in dangerous relationships or dropping every healthy boundary. Loving an enemy from a safe distance still counts. Praying for someone while protecting yourself from further harm is wisdom, not failure.

You were forgiven an unpayable debt. Someone standing in front of you right now owes you far less than that. Set it down.
